Rajasthan is India's largest sandstone-producing state and the source of almost all Indian sandstone exported to Europe, North America and Australia. This guide covers the major varieties, quality grades, formats and import process for international buyers.
Rajasthan — The Heart of India's Sandstone Industry
The geological formations of Rajasthan — particularly around Jodhpur, Kota, Dholpur and Banswara — produce sandstone with exceptional colour range, consistent bedding planes and natural cleft faces ideal for paving, cladding and architectural applications. Rajasthan sandstone has been used in Indian architecture for thousands of years — the Red Fort in Delhi, Jaisalmer Fort and Fatehpur Sikri are all built from regional sandstone varieties. For international buyers, Rajasthan sandstone combines price, availability, colour variety and export logistics in a way no other sandstone source can match.
Major Varieties
Jodhpur Pink / Red: Iconic pink-red sandstone — warm terracotta tones. Used extensively in UK and European architectural cladding and heritage restoration.
Dholpur Beige / Pink: Light beige and pink tones with fine grain. Popular for flooring in residential and hospitality projects across the Middle East and UK.
Mint Fossil: Light grey-green with fossil impressions — most popular in the UK garden paving market. Calibrated 22mm or 28mm.
Buff Sandstone: Warm honey and amber tones — most widely stocked by UK builders merchants and stone importers.
Raj Green: Dark olive-green — premium aesthetic for landscaped garden applications.
Kandla Grey: Consistent grey tones — popular in Germany, Netherlands and Scandinavia for contemporary outdoor living.
Kota Blue / Brown: Dense limestone with grey-blue or brown tones. Polished finish available. Used for commercial flooring.
Finishes and Formats
Finishes: Natural Cleft (riven — most common for paving) · Sawn · Sandblasted · Honed · Polished (on denser varieties like Kota). Standard paving formats: 600×300mm · 600×600mm · 900×600mm · 900×300mm · Mixed packs for random pattern laying · Step treads · Wall cladding tiles (10–15mm thick) · Architectural cladding panels.
Calibration: calibrated (consistent ±2mm) or uncalibrated (lower cost, natural thickness variation). UK and European professional installers specify calibrated as standard.
Quality Grading
First Quality (Premium/Select): consistent calibration, minimal natural fissures, clean sawn edges, colour within acceptable range. Second Quality (Trade): greater natural variation acceptable. Always specify First Quality for professional installation projects. Request physical samples before placing container orders — colour range within a variety can vary between quarry batches.
