Indian sandstone paving has been the dominant choice for UK garden and outdoor projects for over fifteen years. This guide covers colour varieties, quality grades, sizes, import requirements and what to look for when sourcing Indian sandstone for the UK market.

Why Indian Sandstone Leads the UK Paving Market

The UK imports more Indian sandstone than any other country in Europe. The combination of warm natural colour tones, consistent calibration, proven outdoor performance and accessible price points has made Indian sandstone the default specification for landscape gardeners, builders merchants and homeowners. Sandstone is quarried primarily in Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh — regions with geological formations producing stone with exceptional colour range and natural cleft faces ideal for paving applications.

Most Popular Colours for UK Gardens

Mint Fossil: Light grey-green with fossil impressions — the single most popular Indian sandstone in the UK market. Suits traditional and contemporary garden designs equally well.

Buff / Golden Buff: Warm honey and amber tones — complements red brick and natural timber. Widely specified for rear garden terraces.

Raj Green: Dark olive-green with natural mineral variation — premium aesthetic, popular in landscaped gardens.

Autumn Brown: Rich brown tones with orange and red variation — pairs well with dark timber and brown brick.

Kandla Grey: Consistent grey tones — popular for contemporary outdoor living, particularly in Germany and the Netherlands where it is imported in large volumes, and increasingly in the UK.

Modak: Pink-red tones — frequently specified for front garden driveways and path applications.

Quality Grades and Calibration

UK buyers should specify First Quality (Premium/Select) Indian sandstone: consistent calibration (thickness tolerance ±2mm), natural cleft face, smooth sawn edges, minimal natural fissures. Calibrated sandstone (machine-ground to consistent thickness, typically 22mm or 28mm) is preferred by professional installers — it significantly reduces laying time and mortar bed variation.

Second Quality (Trade grade) accepts more natural variation in thickness and colour — acceptable for some applications at lower cost, but not for premium residential projects where consistent laying height is required.

Standard Sizes and Formats

Single sizes: 600×300mm · 600×600mm · 900×600mm · 900×300mm. Mixed size packs (4–5 sizes for random pattern lay — most popular format for UK garden paving). Step treads: typically 900×350mm or 1000×350mm, 35–50mm thick. Coping stones for wall tops. Wall cladding tiles: 10–15mm thick.

UK Import Requirements

ISPM 15 fumigation certificate required for all wooden packing. Customs commodity code: 6802.99. Standard 0% import duty under UK Global Tariff for natural stone. No anti-dumping duties on Indian sandstone. Sea transit Mundra to Felixstowe/Southampton: 20–22 days. Full documentation within 5 working days of departure.
