India is the world's second-largest exporter of natural stone, supplying granite, sandstone, marble, slate and quartzite to over 150 countries. This guide covers the complete import process from supplier identification to customs clearance at your destination port.
Why Source Natural Stone from India
India's natural stone industry spans Telangana (black granite), Andhra Pradesh (grey and coloured granite), Karnataka (white and brown granite), and Rajasthan (sandstone, marble). Each region has established export infrastructure, experienced processors and proven supply chains into Europe, North America, Australia and the Middle East. For buyers, India offers the widest variety of natural stone in the world from a single source country — at prices that no other major producing nation can match across equivalent grades.
Step 1 — Choose Your Supplier Type
The Indian stone industry includes quarry owners, integrated processors (quarry + factory), trading companies and export agents. Buying directly from an integrated processor eliminates one or more intermediary margins and gives you a single point of accountability for quality, production timelines and documentation. When evaluating suppliers, ask: Do they own their processing facility? Can they provide factory photographs or a video tour? Do they provide gloss meter certificates? Can they provide buyer references from your country?
Step 2 — Specify and Sample
Agree specifications in writing before the proforma invoice: stone variety, finish (polished, honed, flamed, leathered), thickness (2cm, 3cm or custom), slab dimensions (gangsaw or cutter), quantity in sqm, and quality requirements (minimum gloss, thickness tolerance). Always request physical samples before placing a container order — photographs cannot reliably convey gloss level, colour depth or surface quality.
Step 3 — Review the Proforma Invoice
The proforma invoice details: stone variety and grade, dimensions and quantity, unit FOB price, port of loading, payment terms, estimated shipment date, validity. Verify all specifications match your agreed requirements before signing off — the proforma becomes the basis for your payment commitment.
Step 4 — Payment Terms
Standard terms: 30% advance TT (wire transfer) on order confirmation, 70% balance TT against copy of Bill of Lading. LC at sight accepted by established exporters. For new supplier relationships, request trade references from buyers in your country before advancing payment.
Step 5 — Production, Inspection and Pre-Shipment Photos
Lead time from confirmed order: 4–6 weeks for standard varieties. Request production updates and pre-shipment photographs of all slabs before container sealing. Independent third-party inspection (SGS, Bureau Veritas, Intertek) can be arranged at your cost before container departure.
Step 6 — Documentation Required for Import
Standard documents for natural stone import clearance: Commercial Invoice · Packing List · Bill of Lading · Certificate of Origin (Indian Chamber of Commerce) · ISPM 15 Fumigation Certificate (for wooden packaging). Some markets require additional certificates — verify with your customs broker before order placement.
Step 7 — Shipping and Transit Times
Standard 20ft and 40ft FCL containers. Transit times from India: UK 20–25 days · Germany 22–28 days · USA East Coast 25–32 days · USA West Coast 22–28 days · Australia 28–35 days · UAE 7–10 days. Export ports: Hyderabad ICD, Chennai, Mumbai, Mundra, Vizag. Port selection depends on destination and stone origin.
