Absolute Black vs DR Black: Which Granite is Right for Your Project?

Two black granites dominate India's export market — Absolute Black and DR Black. Both sourced from Telangana, both polished to mirror finish, both widely used across Europe, the Middle East and North America. But they are meaningfully different stones.

What Is Absolute Black Granite?

Absolute Black is quarried from the Karimnagar, Nalgonda and Mahbubnagar regions of Telangana. It is one of the most geologically uniform granites in the world — a dense, fine-grained black stone with virtually no visible mineral variation, zero porosity and exceptional hardness.

Why exporters love Absolute Black: Consistent colour batch to batch, extremely high gloss (100–110 GU), very competitive pricing, available in large format slabs up to 350×200cm.

What Is DR Black Granite?

DR Black is a denser, finer-grained variant quarried from select quarries in Telangana. Lower quartz content and higher feldspar give it two specific advantages: superior polish retention over time, and significantly better performance for laser engraving and sandblasting.

Why memorial fabricators specify DR Black: Its ultra-fine grain structure holds engraved text and imagery with exceptional clarity. It is the #1 granite for European headstones and monument sets.

A Closer Look at the Technical Differences

The grain structure difference between Absolute Black and DR Black is measurable and significant. Under magnification, Absolute Black shows crystal sizes of 0.5–1.5mm across the primary mineral components. DR Black's crystals are consistently below 0.5mm — noticeably finer. This finer grain is why DR Black polishes to a marginally higher gloss level (typically 105–115 GU versus 100–110 GU for Absolute Black) and why laser engravings on DR Black show sharper edge definition.

The porosity difference is also measurable, though both are very low. Water absorption for Absolute Black typically runs between 0.1% and 0.3% by mass. DR Black typically runs between 0.05% and 0.2%. In practical terms, both are considered low-porosity stones that resist staining well, but DR Black's marginally lower porosity means it is slightly less susceptible to moisture penetration over long outdoor exposure periods — relevant for memorial headstones that will stand outdoors for decades.

Supply and Pricing

Both stones are quarried from Telangana, but from different specific geological formations. Absolute Black is more widely available across the region. DR Black comes from more specific quarry locations, which contributes to its price premium. The premium is typically 10–20% over Absolute Black for equivalent grade and specification. For most countertop and interior applications, this premium is difficult to justify on technical grounds alone. For memorial applications where engraving quality is paramount, the premium is generally considered worthwhile by buyers who have evaluated both materials side by side.

Both stones are available consistently from Naturaw Stones. We maintain quarry relationships for both varieties and can supply either on comparable lead times. For buyers who need both — a common situation for memorial wholesalers who specify DR Black for headstone faces and Absolute Black for bases and kerbs — we supply both from the same shipment and handle the documentation accordingly.
